Sarah Gatwood and “JD”

Posted by Heather in YOUR Horse on August 2nd, 2010

Doctor Beetle Frost aka “JD” is a one of a kind. He has blessed our lives in so many ways. He is an 11 year old AQHA gelding. JD has a personality that, in our barn, is unmatched! Five years ago if you would have asked me if he was a kids horse I would have said “Definitely not!” Now almost a year, of riding him my stepdaughter has won over $7000 on him in the barrel racing world. He was a blessing in disguise for her. Last year we learned that JD had problems with his stifles and hocks. After injections, my vet recommended that we start him on Platinum Ortho-Chon HA II. It worked! He hasn’t had to be injected in over 6 months and is doing excellent, as teh records show! He is a rodeo horse and loves what he does. I plan to do what it takes to keep him there, not only for her but for him. He’s part of the family! Check him out at www.tracequarterhorses.com

On the Road with Megan McLeod

Posted by Heather in Barrel Racing, Rodeo on June 29th, 2010

Idaho native, Megan McLeod, is making her presence known in the world of barrel racing. The 27-year-old Platinum Performance client declares that healthy horses are one of the most important aspects to success in her sport. With residences in Idaho, Arizona and Texas, and many shows in between, McLeod and her horses spend a lot of time on the road, which is why their health and soundness is her top priority.

We caught up with McLeod, on the road, at the National Barrel Horse Association Professional’s Choice Las Vegas Super Show. She turned in a successful weekend, with two finalists in the 1D barrel race. Consisting of over 700 entries on Saturday, McLeod garnered third place in the 1D on her 13-year-old barrel horse, “Uh-oh.” An astounding accomplishment for Uh-Oh, McLeod points out he’s recently been upgraded from “the back-up” to her “go-to-guy.” Uh-Oh also placed in the 1D in the Friday race of 670 entries. Even her 15-year-old, semi-retired horse, ‘Petey,” rose to the occasion to place seventh in Saturday’s 1D.

Running barrels since she was old enough to ride a horse, McLeod declares, “I always craved the speed.” Today, she mainly competes in the Women’s Pro Rodeo Association. She’s qualified for several tour finales and many major short rounds. Read the rest of this entry »

Health Equals Success for Kerryarc Irish Wolfhounds

Showing Irish Wolfhounds is “not for the faint of heart,” as 15-year-old Chandler Collier-Tyler, of Kerryarc Irish Wolfhounds, puts it. And, one quickly begins to understand why when observing the dedication and commitment that the Tyler family puts into breeding and showing these magnificent dogs.

Longtime Platinum Performance clients, the Tyler Family, of Comanche, Calif., are veterans on the Irish Wolfhound show circuit. Their ranch, Kerryarc, is home to generations of champion Irish Wolfhounds that the Tylers have bred and shown.

Their latest achievement is proof of the success of their passion. At the end of May, their dog, Kerryarc Fast Cars, won the annual Irish Wolfhound Club of America National Specialty with Multiple National Specialty, Best in Hound Show and Hound Group. This was the second time Kerryarc Fast Cars won the national title, with the previous win in 2008. According to Collier-Tyler, the last Irish Wolfhound to win two national titles was nearly 30 years ago. “The thrill of a lifetime for a breeder is to win a national with a dog they bred, and even better, bred, owned and handled. We’ve been blessed to win it twice.”

The Irish Wolfhound’s exquisitely tall stature makes them one of the tallest dog breeds. Historically these dogs were used to hunt wolves and had to possess not only speed, but also endurance. They are often described as graceful with an easy yet powerful gait. An easygoing animal, they are usually quiet by nature.

“All of my siblings and I have been raised with the Wolfhounds,” said Collier-Tyler. “They’ve done some incredible things for us. We’ve met people from all walks of life, from all over the world. We’ve been able to travel all across the country and have had some incredible opportunities.”

The Tylers’ love for their dogs is ever-apparent and quite possibly unsurpassed with the care they receive. Read the rest of this entry »

27-Year-Old Endurance Horse Named AERC 6000 Mile Horse

27-Year-Old Endurance Horse Named AERC 6000 Mile Horse

Longtime Platinum Performance client Mike Tracy, of Hollister, CA, recently accepted the American Endurance Ride Conference (AERC) 6000 Mile Horse award for his 27-year-old half-Arabian gelding, Aron Moon+//, at the annual AERC convention in Reno, NV.

It’s rare to see a horse in any discipline successfully compete beyond their teens, especially in endurance, but Tracy’s senior endurance horse, aka “Moon,” is still giving others a run for their money. “He still does 50-mile rides and competitive trail,” said Tracy. “He’s been very successful.”

The pair have compiled too many accomplishments to mention, including five national and 14 regional titles, the 2006 International Arabian Horse Association (IAHA) Distance Horse of the Year Award and the prestigious IAHA Legion of Excellence Award. “He’s been very successful and I’ve been blessed to have a horse this good,” said Tracy.

One part of Tracy’s program that he credits his success to is feeding his horse right, which includes Platinum. He received a bucket of Platinum as a prize 10 years ago when he and Moon won the National Competitive Trail Championship at Live Oak Camp in Santa Ynez and has continued feeding it ever since. “I got it and I liked it, so I kept buying it,” said Tracy. “I think you can help your equine athlete by how you feed them. Especially a horse that’s in competition, they need extra supplements. Obviously something I’m doing has to be helping him; it’s not like he’s just been sitting out in the pasture.”

A recent blood test performed on Moon proved that he is in top condition despite his age. His veterinarian was amazed at the results. “I wish my own results were as good as this horse’s,” said Dr. Roger Bruce of Ausaymas Veterinary Service in Hollister, California.

“He’s like a Timex, he takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’,” said Tracy.

Tracy bought Moon when he was only four years old and had success on him from the start. They’ve competed not only in endurance, but in ride and tie, competitive trail and triathalons. In 2007, he received the AERC Pard’ners Award, an award which honors horse and rider partners who engender a spirit of friendship, enthusiasm and championship. He’s earned six Tevis Cup buckles and has finished in the top ten 41 times.

The list of accomplishments goes on, proving that Tracy and Moon are truly a Platinum pair.

Ashlee Tenn and “Honey”

Posted by Heather in YOUR Horse on April 1st, 2010

I have had honey for 7 years. Well, she isn’t fully mine. My neighbors moved in 7 years ago with her, and i fell in love with her. They let me take care of her, ride her, and love her. Then her owner, who was by then my hero, broke her back. Honey was forogtten, and I had to take care of her FULL TIME. Hard work for an 11 year old.. I have proved myself a horse whisperer, so now i have mroe responsiblitly and people look to me for advice. Honey has had a hard life, like me. She founders alot, and it’s been a tough road. She’s been on her death bed about 10 times. She survived, becasue she wasn’t done with me yet(: and i wasn’t done with her. She wasn’t done changing kid’s lives, just like she changed mine. I would problaby be with all the stoners with out my horses. They have kept me on my feet. She will always be mine, and i will always be hers, till the day she dies.

Melissa Rails and “Spyder Web”

Posted by Heather in YOUR Horse on March 26th, 2010

Spyder Web is a 6 year old NSH. When he was 2 he dislocated his right front fetlock 90 degress, and damaged his radical nerve. He was hanging from a pipe corral, when we found him his temp was 91 degrees and he was in shock dieing. We put a cast on his leg every week for 6 months, gave him steroids to help the nerve regenerate. For one month he was only able to walk backward, the nerve that tells pulls the leg forward was damaged. I put him on Platinum Performance, Hoof Support, and Ortho Chon right away. Hopes of Spyder recovering enough to be a show horse was slim, but I have been riding and showing Spyder succcessfully for two years now. Last year Spyder and I received high point Training Level Amatuer Rider for Bear Valley Dressage Horse Shows. Thank You Platinum for helping Spyder fully recover from his tragic accident!!!

Joyce Barber and “Libby”

Posted by Heather in YOUR Horse on March 26th, 2010

Meet Libby, my 14 yr old Standardbred mare. I rescued her 3 1/2 years ago and our journey began. She was never started under saddle, so we had a lot of work to do as my goal was to have a horse to take trail riding. Well, now we hit the trails as often as possible, and she especially loves the trails in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains (so do I). She has been on Platinum Performance CJ for over one year; I always get compliments on her beautiful, shiny coat…hmmm, I wonder what contributes to that. Thanks for the wonderful ride Miss Libby.

Hardin Wins $20,000 Grand Prix on Platinum’s Pedro

Santa Ynez Valley, California, March 24, 2010—Platinum Performance (http://www.platinumperformance.com) team member, Kristin Hardin wins $20,000 Scottsdale Spring Festival Grand Prix riding Platinum’s Pedro on Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Hardin claimed victory in the premiere class of the Arizona show, a 1.4 meter jumper class, on her aptly-named 19-year-old gelding Platinum’s Pedro. Although she is no stranger to winning, the accomplished hunter/jumper trainer and competitor doesn’t take it for granted.

“It’s very rewarding to win. I feel very happy for my horse that he gets the accolades he deserves. It’s a great feeling to have him do that well at his age,” said Hardin.

Hardin purchased “Pedro” nine years ago as a horse with the classic underdog story. He had literally been around the world and didn’t have the best reputation. She changed his feeding program, and then his name to Platinum’s Pedro, just knowing that she could make a star out of him. And, that she did; he has proved himself with a nearly perfect show record and lifetime earnings of almost $75,000. Read the rest of this entry »

Wendy Hart and “Sugar”

Posted by Heather in YOUR Horse on March 4th, 2010

I went in the stall of the sorrel horse, who’d recently been turned over to the Conquistador Equine Rescue and Advocacy Program. I wanted a closer look at the brand on his hip. When I touched his body, hair came away in large clumps. Aside from being emaciated (he weighed in at 600lbs) his whole body was covered in rain rot. I called the Director of the rescue, and volunteered to wash him the next day. Medicated shampoo was provided, and the horse called “Blaze” stood like a champ for 3 hours on the hot summer day in Arizona while I scrubbed, rinsed and repeated. When I was done I sat on an overturned bucket to watch, I allowed him to graze on the few tufts of green grass growing around the wash rack. After munching a few bites, he walked Read the rest of this entry »
